Mein Vortrag am FACHBEREICHSTAG 2026 an der Freien Universität Berlin

My presentation at DEPARTMENT DAY 2026 at Freie Universität Berlin

Johanna Elsen

The student council initiative of the Department of Educational Sciences and Psychology invited me to be a guest speaker at the Department Day 2026 of Freie Universität Berlin on May 19, 2026.

The program included workshops, lectures, and open discussion rounds on socially and psychologically relevant topics that are often neglected in studies. The spectrum of content ranged from mental health and social stigmatization to clinical-psychological practical fields, as well as questions concerning school, pedagogy, and teaching. Topics such as political education, neurodivergence, inclusion, and dealing with social and health challenges were also in focus.

In my lecture on "Understanding and Helping Eating Disorders," I presented my book Normal Weight, its contents, and the experiences and motivations behind it to approximately 30 students. I also spoke about eating-disorder-specific topics such as the influence of social media, competition among affected individuals, and the role and function of clinics and therapeutic facilities.

Afterwards, I had several conversations with the students, which once again showed me how great the need for discussion is. The students asked incredibly thoughtful, honest, and profound questions. Even today, I was able to take away some valuable insights that will shape my future work. It means a great deal to me to know that future therapists, social workers, etc., can develop a more nuanced and reflective approach to eating disorders through my work – an approach they will carry forward in their own work. If this can help affected individuals earlier, more sensitively, and more targeted, that is priceless to me. That is exactly what Normal Weight stands for.

Throughout the day, it was clearly noticeable how much commitment went into organizing and designing the event. I am very grateful to have been part of Department Day 2026.
