GASTVORTRAG beim Campus-Abend der DHBW Villingen-Schwenningen

GUEST LECTURE at the Campus Evening of DHBW Villingen-Schwenningen

Johanna Elsen

On April 15, 2026, I was a guest at DHBW Villingen-Schwenningen for a campus evening. In my lecture on eating disorders, I presented my book, as well as the content and motivations behind it, to students, interested parties, and professionals.

I spoke about the history of its creation and particularly addressed aspects that are often neglected in public perception: affected individuals who do not fit the typical cliché, the competitive struggle among those with the disorder, and the increasing influence of social media. The role of clinics and the question of how relatives and professionals can provide supportive care were also central topics.

Afterward, an open question-and-answer session took place. The participants contributed diverse perspectives – from personal experiences to professional questions. The discussion particularly focused on dealing with eating disorders in everyday life, existing support services, and the challenges arising from digital media.

The event was organized through the "Social Work" study program. Eating disorders are already part of the curriculum here – at the same time, it repeatedly shows how relevant and practical the topic is, especially for those who will later work in mental health institutions. Knowing that many future professionals are taking new knowledge with them to better understand and support affected individuals means a lot to me. It motivates me to give further lectures at universities, colleges, and clinical facilities.

I was truly delighted by the great interest, the many participants, and the active involvement. It was a very successful evening with many important impulses and encounters from which I will certainly take away a lot for the future! I am grateful for the invitation and the opportunity to share my knowledge and experiences in this setting.
